Trollstua

Designed by architect, Will Winkelman, Trollstua boasts state-of-the-art green building design, including a green roof comprising a diverse community of colorful sedges, a passive solar and radiant floor heating system supplemented by a Danish soapstone woodstove, carefully selected local construction and interior materials, and modern energy-star stainless steel appliances. The distinctive architectural design showcases a dramatic combination of wood, glass, and stone that is well-integrated with the surrounding landscape. This unique dwelling creates a feeling of majestic presence that balances sophistication with rustic Maine seacoast living. Recently featured in Maine Home & Design, Trollstua was described as:
"...a bright, comfortable, and energy-efficient new structure...that respect(s) the beautiful site. ...over the living and dining areas the roof twists and angles up dramatically to let the panoramic [water] views and sunlight flood in. Traditional roofing materials don't lend themselves well to flat, twisting roof forms, and a planted roof was an attractive and obvious choice to blend in with the natural surroundings, reduce runoff, and bolster the already superinsulated building envelope. Nearly all of the interior and exterior finishes were sourced from local mills and quarries, which fit in nicely with the green spirit of the house. The scale of the finishes was deliberately exaggerated to emphasize the structure's relationship to its natural surroundings."  Trollstua's ideal location—surrounded by wetlands, fields, and ocean—affords a unique mix of privacy and ambiance. Enjoy the awe-inspiring beauty and tranquility of the Maine Coast, while watching the abundant wildlife that follow the tides and seasons from the glassed-in living room or the open-air stone patio, including egrets, blue herons, seagulls, and a plethora of diverse duck species. Paddle out in a kayak or canoe to explore the surroundings and wildlife from the water. Trollstua is also conveniently situated near a wide range of recreational, shopping & dining, and sight-seeing opportunities and special events and festivals. Positioned at the gateway to the spectacular series of narrow peninsulas and islands—Harpswell Neck, Bailey's Island, Cundy's Harbor, Orr's Island,—a trip down these winding roads brings stunning glimpses of rock outcrops, shimmering water, and dotted forests around nearly every bend.
